JUST IN: New water tariffs announced

We are currently at Level 1 and urging the community to use water sparingly

According to Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the Executive Mayor, the water tariffs for the 2016/ 2017 financial year were announced during the most recent budget speech.

Tshidiso said the increase in tariffs can be attributed to the restrictions put in place to save water.

The water and other important tariffs have increased as follows:

• Refuse and sanitation – 6 per cent.

• Basic sewerage – 6,6 per cent.

• Water provision – 12,9 per cent.

• Electricity – 9,4 per cent.

• Property rates with six percent.

“There are three levels of enforcement. We are currently at Level 1, and urging the community to use water sparingly. If the situation doesn’t improve we will be forced to implement Level 2,” Tshidiso said.

Level 2 enforcement includes urging the community to refrain from watering their gardens between 6 am and 6 pm as well as washing cars with buckets, not hosepipes and covering swimming pools to prevent evaporation.

Level 3 enforcement includes no access to water during the day except during the morning and evening.

“We are currently running various road shows in order to educate the community about water restrictions and the importance of saving water,” Tshidiso concluded.
