Rand West City to get 300 trees

The Department of Environmental affairs aims to plant at least 300 trees throughout Rand West City by the end of September.

On Friday, 6 September, the Dhladhla Foundation launched its tree-planting project in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The event took place at the Jabulani Informal Settlement, just outside Randgate on the R41. As September is Arbour month, Sipho Dhladhla, chairman of the Dhladhla Foundation thought it good to plant trees donated by the Department of Environmental Affairs at various schools.

To kick-start the project, members of the foundation planted 20 trees at the Jabulani Crèche where each child was assigned to a tree.

“This project will be teaching the children the concept of growth. They will be growing with the trees and it will teach them to care and love. These trees will also teach them interpersonal skills which will greatly benefit them,” said Donovan Celvin Meyer, Gauteng provincial manager of the Dhladhla Foundation.

The other schools visited on Friday include Phandulazi Primary School, Maleratong Primary School, Matlapaneng Primary School and Bulelani Primary School. The Foundation’s aim is to plant a total of 300 trees throughout the month, covering the entire Rand West City.

“We want to build a culture of being surrounded by a green environment. The children will not only grow with a tree, but they will also know what it’s like to keep it alive,” Donovan said.

Sipho said this fits well with the foundation’s pillars, one of them being an environmental pillar.

“It gives me great pleasure to know we are able to help the community in so many different ways. We want to encourage the rest of the community to also help those in need wherever they possibly can,” Sipho concluded.
