Son allegedly burns mom’s home down

Son arrested after allegedly setting his mother's home alight because of a money dispute.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly setting his mother’s home alight because of a money dispute.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident took place at about 9.10am on Tuesday, 13 September.

The suspect allegedly demanded money from his mother and when she did not give it to him, he became angry and chased her from her own home.

She allegedly went to a neighbour until her son cooled down but instead received a call informing her that her home was on fire.

“Members of the community all tried to extinguish the fire, but the damage was already done,” Lefakane said.

The Bekkersdal Police were called out to the scene and an arson case was later opened. The suspect was arrested and charged and appeared before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 15 September.
