Local acts shine at Go West Festival

A number of local acts in the West Rand performed at the Go West Festival.

While the annual Go West Festival set the stage for top acts in all musical genres, it also was a platform for local acts in the West Rand to show what they’re made of.

The first installment of the Go West Festival kicked off on Saturday, 3 September in Khutsong, where traditional groups from Mohlakeng, Bekkersdal, Kagiso and Khutsong had a chance to put their talent on display ahead of the main act, The Soul Brothers – known as the legends of Mbaqanga music. Other groups involved were the St Ezekiel Brass Band from Mohlakeng, the Red For Danger Pantsula dancers and Born 2 Move from Simunye.

Sunday, 4 September was the day for Clap and Tap music, with African gospel choirs from the West Rand, such as Angels of St Jesus from Bekkersdal, sharing the stage with top acts including the Ho Phetehile gospel choir and Isaac as well as The Messengers at the Chief Mogale Community hall near Kagiso.

“This festival would give us West Randers a chance to take our talent to another level if it could be given more push by the organisers,” said Palesa Mangole from Mohlakeng, who performed with Ho Phetehile.

Another group that made an appearance was The Recreators – an a cappella act from Toekomsrus – who also featured at the Randfontein Show.
