The Marthinus Pelser court case is in full swing at this moment. Pelser showed no emotion while the investigative officer describes what he had seen when he arrived at the scene.
He stated he was on standby when he received the call. After he had entered the home, he found the body of the six-month-old baby in his bed in the bedroom. He said the baby was half naked and that he noticed burns on the baby’s face, chest and hands. The cot was also wet.
The constable said he noticed the bathroom door had a hole in it and a robe was inside the hole. It appeared to him that someone was trying to hang something. According to the officer, the also found clothes in the bathroom belonging to an adult male and there was a blood mark on the door frame.
He also found a broken mirror in the dining room and noticed a knife missing from the kitchen. The bruises on the baby’s back and legs were found upon closer investigation. He said he noticed something strange regarding the shape of the baby’s head. There seemed to be a dent in the baby’s head, which was confirmed to be fractured. After a short break, the officer continued, saying the baby’s mother indicated that she had left the child in the care of the accused and that she saw the accused coming from the bathroom carrying a knife.
The mother said the accused had cuts on his wrists and neck, and she asked him what had happened. She wanted to see her child and took off her work jacket. The accused took the jacket when she went to see her baby and left their home. The accused told the mother not to go into the room because the child was asleep. The mother entered the room and found the baby injured. At that point the child had already passed away. The circumstances surrounding the accused’s arrest are currently being discussed.
