The overall crime rate in Randfontein and Westonaria increased, according to the latest crime statistics provided by the South African Police Service.
The crime rate in Randfontein has increased from 13 198 in 2014/ 2015 to 13 834 in 2015/ 2016, including the 17 community-reported serious crimes. Similarly, Westonaria has increased from 4 488 to 4 679.
Although Randfontein and Westonaria have merged, statistical information was recorded separately for the two towns.
In Randfontein murder is up by 43,2 per cent, sexual offences by 18,2 per cent, burglary at residential premises up by 15,8 per cent, stock theft up by 90,9 per cent, truck hijacking by 66,7 per cent and attempted murder by 91,7 per cent. There is, however, a drop in arson by 50 per cent, burglary at non-residential premises by 18,8 per cent, theft out of or from motor vehicles by 7,9 per cent, carjacking by 2,7 per cent and bank robbery by 100 per cent, to name a few.
In Westonaria, murder went up by 23,5 per cent, sexual offences by 27,5 per cent, burglary at residential premises up by 13.,9 per cent and stock theft up by 23,5 per cent. Crimes that did show a drop was assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm by 14,8 per cent, shoplifting by 15,6 per cent, carjacking by 20 per cent and truck hijacking by 30 per cent.
Westonaria crime statistics
Contact crimes (crimes against a person):
• Overall increase from 605 in 2014/ 2015 to 633 in 2015/ 2016
Contact-related crimes:
• Overall drop from 122 in 2014/ 2015 to 119 in 2015/ 2016
Crime detected as a result of police action:
• Overall increase from 240 in 2014/ 2015 to 257 in 2015/ 2016
Property-related crime:
• Overall increase from 650 in 2014/ 2015 to 721 in 2015/ 2016
Other serious crimes:
• Overall drop from 692 in 2014/ 2016 to 680 in 2015/ 2016
Community-reported serious crimes:
• Overall increase from 2 069 in 2014/ 2015 to 2 153 in 2015/ 2016
Aggravated robbery:
• Overall increase from 110 in 2014/ 2015 to 116 in 2015/ 2016
Randfontein crime statistics
Contact crimes (crimes against a person):
• Overall increase from 2 105 in 2014/ 2015 to 2 323 in 2015/ 2016
Contact-related crimes:
• Overall drop from 535 2014/ 2015 to 522 in 2015/ 2016
Crime detected as a result of police action:
• Overall increase from 510 in 2014/ 2015 to 634 in 2015/ 2016
Property-related crime:
• Overall increase from 1 796 in 2014/ 2015 to 1 921 in 2015/ 2016
Other serious crimes:
• Overall drop from 1 797 in 2014/ 2016 to 1 716 in 2015/ 2016
Community-reported serious crimes:
• Overall increase from 6 233 in 2014/ 2015 to 6 482 in 2015/ 2016
Aggravated robbery:
• Overall increase from 222 in 2014/ 2015 to 236 in 2015/ 2016
