Let’s hope the ‘new’ municipality delivers

As tax- and rate-payers, we deserve better service delivery than we have been receiving.

I find it amusing that certain hopeful ANC ward candidates took credit (for their party) for having roads repaired in Helikon Park, namely the ‘Pick n Pay’ Street.

Yes, this road was sorely in need of repair and requests for this had been sent to council many, many times by the DA ward councillor for that area, Craig Harrison.

Two days after the municipal election, the road was resurfaced – which is great – and one ANC candidate – who was not elected for his ward – immediately gave the credit to the ANC on social media. Then, another ANC candidate had the audacity to claim credit for the re-surfacing of said road in the Herald. Quote: “ … and as promised, some of the roads have been resurfaced.” (Letter to the Editor, Randfontein Herald,19 August).

So please tell me, did the council completely ignore the DA ward councillor’s many requests from June 2016 – weekly SMS reminders, personal discussions and requests to the Infrastructure Directors, Roads Department and the Mayor, not to mention many emails – to have the road repaired and only jumped into action when the ANC candidate opened her mouth about the same problem?

What does this tell us about the workings of the municipality? Ignore requests and complaints from anyone except ANC councillors so everyone can see how wonderful they are?

Please people. This town is in a sad state because the ANC-run municipality does not particularly care about service delivery and only serves its own interests. It’s time the party woke up and realised that support for the ANC is weakening for obvious reasons.

As tax- and rate-payers, we deserve better service delivery than we have been receiving. Let’s hope the ‘new’ Rand West City Local Municipality gets its act together and delivers on its promises – don’t we deserve to take pride in our town again?

Hats off to all the DA councillors who won their wards – I know they have a tough job trying to resolve complaints and problems and do their best, but very often their hands are tied because of internal politics and inept council employees.

So instead of attacking them on social media, let’s try and understand the problems they face in trying to resolve the many issues in their wards and support them.
