Women gather for fitness

Jog, 5km walk and aerobic marathon for women in CBD.

Dozens of women of all shapes and sizes arrived to take part in a jog, a 5km walk and an aerobics marathon that stretched from Mohlakeng to the Randfontein CBD as part of August’s Women’s Month celebrations.

While it was fun to some, others were out of breath. The event was won by a paramedic and fire-fighter named Opelo Gabaocwe, in a time of 29 minutes, 1 second, followed by a friend, Mami Lefakane in 40 minutes and 46 seconds. Finishing third was Christine Pietersen, with a time of just over 45 minutes. Mpula Molefe, who is in her 60s, then proved a point when she finished seventh overall against a group of youngsters.

The jog and walk were indeed a different way for women to come together, but that was not all, as the women gathered in the CBD for an aerobics marathon outside the Body Tech Gym after the jog/ walk. It was also a day on which first-timers could test their stamina on equipment such as treadmills.

This event was the second Women’s Day Fitness celebration organised by the West Rand Randfontein sub-district Health Department. “Next time, we are going to make it more exciting by having commercial sponsors as well,” said Anges Segone of the Department.

Andrew Kroet from Body Tech Gym added, “We also played an important role in marking Women’s Day by hosting a group of elderly women from Mohlakeng whom we pampered and spoiled with massages, food and drinks.”
