Youth cast votes for jobs, bursaries

Youngster: I am looking forward to the municipality and those in charge to provide better services, most of all education.

The municipal elections have come and gone, but first time young voters Boitumelo Dlamini and Thapelo Khupari will remember it as a new and interesting experience.

They were just two of the many who patiently stood in long lines to cast a vote at the Matlapaneng Primary School in Mohlakeng on 3 August.

While it is widely believed that young people in their 20s are not interested in matters such as voting, they said they do see the point of participating in elections that could determine their future.

“It is my first time to vote,” said Boitumelo.

“I am looking forward to seeing the municipality and those in charge providing better services, most of all education, in the form of bursaries for people who have matriculated, especially those from poor families.”

“It is just like any other day to be voting, it is just that we have expectations of better service delivery from those in charge. They also have to boost education for the youth,” Thapelo added.

It also was a lucky day for veteran former teacher, Machakane Masiza, whose birthday happened to coincide with election day. “I am happy to have my birthday on a day as significant as this one, in Women’s Month,” she said.

“We’ve come far as South Africans, and having experienced the worst in the past it is important to mark the changes by casting our votes.”
