Teen arrested for hijacked vehicle

The teen was one of four suspects in the vehicle.

A teenager has been arrested for being in possession of a hijacked vehicle.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the teen was arrested on Saturday, 20 August.

Lefakane said the Bekkersdal Police were conducting their routine patrol duties when they spotted a vehicle with four occupants. She said the officers allegedly approached the vehicle but as they got closer, the occupants climbed out of it and started running. The police chased them and managed to arrest one of the four.

The teen suspect was charged with being in possession of a hijacked vehicle and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court within the next week.

This is the second incident of being in possession of a hijacked vehicle on the N12, Westonaria in the last three months.

In the previous incident, a 32-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of a vehicle he claimed to have bought from someone else. Regardless of the reason, the man appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 16 May, shortly after the arrest.

Since the beginning of the year, there has been a wave of hijackings in Randfontein and Westonaria. The last incident reported on by the Herald occurred on 28 July. It turned out to be a bogus police hijacking.

The Bekkersdal Police have on various occasions sent out warnings and are actively hunting for the hijackers terrorising motorists in the area.
