Teine hammers Poorte to claim title
Teine beat Poorte for the first time in 11 years.
Randfontein Rugby Club has achieved heights it has not reached in 11 years, and vows to keep up its current pace.
The club’s first team, Mapogo Teine, beat Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) with a score of 35–15 in the Pirates Grand Challenge Shield final during the weekend of 20 and 21 August, making Teine the winners of their league. 2016 marks the first time in 11 years that the club has beaten Poorte. The win in the final, however, is not the only win this year – the team beat Poorte on two occasions before the league final.
The Pirates final took place on the University of Witwatersrand’s (Wits) fields. Jannie van Loggerenberg said the match went well, but things were not in their favour for the entire 80 minutes. He said there was a point in the match where they were only five points ahead of Poorte, and it seemed as if Poorte was making a comeback.
However, that’s when Francois Swys Pretorius swept in to score two tries, making him a contender for the man of the match award. Pretorius is a new face in the Teine team, having recently moved up from the club’s U/21 side.
Rudi Marx, the Teine captain, was said to have shown a tremendous amount of leadership on the field. This gained him the title of man of the match.
This win makes for the club’s 19th consecutive win this season.
This is not the only good news from the Teine boys – five of their players were chosen to play in the Lions’ Amateur Team, which will be playing in the Amateur Week competition in Alberton this week.

The club is naturally thrilled with its achievements in the league, and plans to recruit more coaches next year. They urge those in the community with roots in rugby to apply to be a coach or team manager at the club.
