Another win for R’fontein hockey boys

Randfontein beat Hooked on Hockey 3-0 on home ground.

The men’s team from Randfontein Hockey Club (RHC) remain undefeated in the Southern Gauteng 5th League after another impressive 3–0 win against Hooked on Hockey (HOH) at home on Sunday, 24 July.

The match took place at Hoërskool Riebeeckrand, where the cold and wind forecast injuries for both team’s players. Players from both sides took a number of hits, but none were serious enough to cause them much trouble in the last few matches of the season.

The game was off to a rough start for RHC, as they found it difficult to penetrate HOH’s defence, but it wasn’t long before RHC knocked their guard down.

After the initial struggle, RHC was making waves in the opposition’s striking circle. HOH conceded three short corners in the first half, but none of them resulted in a goal for RHC.

Twenty-two minutes into the match, Shady Nchabeleng made a clean run to HOH’s striking circle, and scored the first goal of the match. Shady was one of the victims of the cold weather. He sustained a gash to his chin that had to be treated with a butterfly closure by the on-duty medic.

Seconds from the half-time whistle, Stephan Hetzel put RHC another goal ahead of HOH. In the second half of the match, the umpire seemed to be playing the role of a blackjack dealer, carding players across the board. Two green cards went to RHC and one to HOH.

After what seemed to be a lengthy blackjack game, RHC once again penetrated the opposition’s striking circle to score a reverse stick shot at goal while the keeper was seemingly out taking a walk. The keeper left his mark to defend against RHC’s strikers while Marius Stapelberg went in to score.

RHC remains undefeated and have three more matches to go. So far they have only conceded two goals – and they plan to keep it that way.
