Hope for the ill in need

Randfontein community urged to get involved.

The Krugersdorp Hospice, which served the entire West Rand including Randfontein and Westonaria, recently closed its doors, leaving patients without care or any hope of recovery.

However, just months later, a new Hospice opened its doors. The Old Oak Hospice Diverse will now pick up where the previous hospice left off.

Old Oak has been helped to where they are now by a number of sponsors. Ina Meiring said their list of sponsors is long, but she would like to thank each and every company and individual for sponsoring.

“Let us make the difference and not wait for it to happen,” Ina said. She urges the Randfontein community to get involved as they are in dire need of staff to run the office smoothly.

“Thank you to the volunteers, my right hands who spend unlimited time with me pushing furniture and bringing it all together. It takes hard work to help and serve our West Rand community – let’s join hands and change the West Rand and support each other where we can,” she said.

What Old Oaks offers the community:

• Home-based care

• Day-care and support groups for cancer and HIV patients

• Weekend support groups such as Wings of Hope Breast Cancer Support, West Rand and Let’s Talk About Cancer

• Bereavement counselling

• Complementary therapies

• Inpatient Unit (IPU) (Opening in September)

• Courses on bereavement counselling and personal development

Ina said their doors are open to anyone diagnosed with cancer, HIV and AIDS, and motor neuron disease.

Old Oak has a wall on Paardekraal Road in Krugersdorp on which businesses can advertise for a fee. Funds generated by these ads are used to support the hospice. Ina made it very clear that all donations, including money, will only be accepted at 51 Burger Street, Krugersdorp, where Old Oaks is located. “Our trained staff will take care of and issue a receipt for donations or gifts to Old Oak.” Old Oaks is still in need of computers/ laptops, printers, ink, paper, and kitchenware.

Ina is concerned that residents might still take donations to the old Hospice shop and wants to make it clear that Old Oak is not part of it. She urges residents to call Old Oak to report anything that looks suspicious regarding donations. “We want to make it clear that no one without an Old Oak Hospice Diverse letter may receive or take care of any donations for the new Hospice,” she said.
