Beware of cyber scams and online fraud

It is important to know to protect yourself online.

As technology improves every day, cyber criminals are improving as well, therefore it is crucial to know how to protect yourself against this form of crime.

Phishing and fraud scams are methods of deceitfully obtaining personal information such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card. This information is obtained by calling, sending emails or cell phone messages that appear like they come from trusted sources such as banks or legitimate companies.

These emails or messages direct users to click on a link that will open a fake website which is designed to trick a user into thinking it’s the real deal in order to obtain their personal financial details.

The police have released important information to keep in mind when you suspect you are being scammed.

What you can do to prevent fraud and scams:

Do not reply when you receive emails or cell phone messages appearing to be from your bank that request your personal details. Police say no bank will ever ask you to share your account details via email. They add not to share your passwords with anyone and to try not to write them down.

Police say you should never save your internet banking password or any personal details on your desktop, nor should you leave your computer unattended after entering your banking password. Remember to always log off or sign off when you are done with your banking, they say.

It is advisable to avoid internet banking in public areas such as internet cafés or libraries where people you do not now can access the computer. Try to change your passwords often.

Police advise to put transaction limits on your accounts and only share your credit card details with reputable companies. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is. Never send money or give online account details to anyone you do not know or trust.
