Simplicity Day: Today less is more

'The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more but in developing the capacity to enjoy less'

According to the National Day Calendar it’s time to slow down, breathe and invest your energy in the things that matter – it’s time to go back to basics.

Today is Simplicity Day and it celebrates author and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau.

Thoreau was born on 12 July, 1817 and died on 6 May. 1862. He is a well known advocate for living a life of simplicity and he wrote Walden, a book on simple living in natural surroundings.

He declared that as one simplifies life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex. This can be done by enjoying the simple things in life and striving for balance.

“Choosing to live a life of simplicity is not about choosing to live in poverty; it is about living in balance. Based on three key elements – ecological awareness, frugal consumption and personal growth, voluntary simplicity is helping people change their lives and collectively helping to create a better world.” Thoreau wrote in his book.

This serves as a natural stress reliever. Thoreau added that one should use one’s energy solely for things that matter.

Philosopher, Socrates sums Simplicity Day up well in one quote; “The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”

Paper Bag Day, Different Coloured Eyes Day and Pecan Pie Day is also celebrated on 12 July.
