Update: Crossing of Death made safer

Pleas from Randfontein and Tarlton residents have been answered.

Randfontein’s infamous ‘Crossing of Death’ has finally been made safer for motorists and pedestrians to use without the fear of being hit by an oncoming car.

The intersection of Northway Road and the R24 is now a four-way stop that can boast with a lower speed limit, prominent signage and a new coat of paint.

The speed limit on the R24 – which was believed to have been the initial problem – has been reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h. The limit change is also accompanied by painted signage on the road warning of the stop ahead. In addition, clear signage has been erected.

These developments come after a two elderly women lost their lives at the intersection in April. This provoked an outcry for provincial government to put measures in place to make the intersection more visible to community members, paramedics and traffic officials.

On the day of the collision, members of the West Rand District Municipality and representatives from provincial government were on scene, gathering enough evidence to put forward a proposal for making changes at the intersection.

The Herald does not know exactly when the intersection was revamped, but it has taken approximately two months for the changes to be made.

DA ward councillor Peter Dick, whose ward ends at the intersection, said he is impressed with the quick developments but did note that grass along the west-bound Northway Road still needs to be cut in order for people to see the signage that accompanies the new-look intersection.

The intersection could also do with some lights, but the developments are welcomed by those who fought for the change.
