Don’t ignore traffic fines, police warn

Traffic Police warning: The days of not paying fines are over.

The Randfontein Traffic Police Department has issued a warning to Randfontein motorists – the days of not paying fines and getting away with it are over.

The department has acquired an Automatic Number Plate Recovery System (ANPR), a system that is commonly used during road blocks to see whether motorists have outstanding fines or warrants of arrests against their names. They used it for the first time in an operation that took place recently, just after the Randfontein Licensing Department turn off on the R28.

Superintendent Dolly Lethoko, who was in charge of the operation, said motorists should come to the traffic police willingly to pay their fines rather than be pulled over for non-payment.

She explained that motorists should not fear road blocks as they can alert drivers to outstanding fines they may be unaware of. The Randfontein Traffic Police Department allows motorists to pay their fines, in cash or with cards, at such road blocks.

“Motorists should get paying their fines out of the way to avoid consequences such as being jailed. They should also regularly check whether they have fines against their names,” Lethoko said.

Motorists can find out whether they have fines or warrants of arrests against their names at the Randfontein Traffic Police Department, at a road block or they can visit www.payyourbills.co.za.

The Randfontein Traffic Police warned that this is the first of many such operations they will be having, and urge motorists to pay their outstanding fines.
