Learn about the power of poison

Power of Poison exhibition at Silverstar to feature real poisonous animals and plants.

Silverstar Casino is delighted to bring the award-winning exhibition, The Power of Poison, to Johannesburg for the very first time.

The exhibition will run from 24 June to 24 August from 10am to 7pm.

“Silverstar is excited to host this incredible expo, which explores some of history’s most intriguing cases of poison, many of which remain puzzling today,” said Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manager.

“As with our previous exhibitions like The Terracotta Army and the First Emperor of China, we have partnered with Expo RSA, one of the biggest names in the industry, to give visitors a once in a lifetime experience.”

“All Silverstar’s expos carry significant educational elements – something which we are very passionate about as part of our corporate social responsibility commitment, which entails enhancing education and working with local schools. We have invited more than 1 800 pupils and educators from 10 schools in the area to experience these exhibitions.”

Hosted in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History, The Power of Poison exhibition will cover five fascinating themes – Poison in Nature, Poison in Myth and Legend, Detecting Poison, Poison by Accident and Poison for Good.

These themes all explore poison’s paradoxical roles in nature, human health, history, literature and myth from across the globe. The show, hosted at The Globe, will feature real poisonous animals and plants, including South African and African species.

Visitors of all ages will be able to identify which familiar tales of illness, enchantment, and death by poison feature in countless fairy tales from around the world.

“At Silverstar, we want our visitors to experience it all, which is why they can also partake in a live presentation featuring a real-life case of poisoning, as well as discover key advances in toxicology and the science behind detecting poison,” Collinson added.

“In addition, attendees will learn how studying poison’s effects on human cells helps scientists to figure out how to protect, repair and ultimately heal them.”
