Six gunmen target smallholding shop

Police urge people to report the above-mentioned crimes within 24 hours after their occurrence.

Yet another act of violence has occurred on Randfontein’s smallholdings, with six armed suspects recently targeting a small business.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police said the incident took place on 12 June at approximately 4:30pm, in the Middelvlei smallholding area.

Ernst said the victim alleged that six men entered the store under the pretence of buying goods, but later one of them pulled out a firearm and demanded that the victim give him money.

“The suspects took cigarettes, airtime and cash,” Ernst said.

They made a quick getaway after the incident in a grey Mazda 3 with an unknown registration number.

This armed robbery comes shortly after police released a statement after talks with AfriForum. In the statement, they declared that farm and smallholding violence of every sort is an emerging priority in the current 2016/ 2017 financial year

Police term these incidents as acts of violence against people residing on, working on, or visiting farms and smallholdings. This description includes farm owners, farm workers and all other citizens of South Africa, irrespective or race, colour, creed, religion or sex. The definition encompasses crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and inflicting bodily harm. Destruction of infrastructure and property in rural communities with the aim of disrupting legal farming activities operating as commercial concerns is also included.

Police urge people to report the above-mentioned crimes within 24 hours after their occurrence.

The last farm attack in Randfontein took place in March when a family of four, including a 9-year-old girl, were brutally murdered in their home on a farm in Rodora, Doornfontein.
