Young musicians knockin’ on fame’s door
Group of four members with a growing record company believes music is the answer to bigger, better things.
A group of youngsters who started out by recording music in a cupboard is knocking on fame’s door.
They have formed a group of four musicians who call themselves Klassiq Phlow Entertainment, and have started a growing record company focusing on the music genres of hip-hop, R&B, soul and jazz.
Hans Dickson, better known by the name of Widdo Beatz, is the producer. He is the youngest member, at a mere 18 years of age. A pastor’s child, he grew up in Toekomsrus.
Sicelo Legotlo, 24, and known as Nastee Skillz, is the manager, producer, singer and sound engineer. Born in Soweto, Sicelo moved to Randfontein when he was just one year old. He and 21-year-old Henrico Vuyani Majika – the big star singer best known as Nurdi Twist, who is the third member of the group – started Klassiq Phlow Entertainment in 2009 at home, in a bedroom cupboard.
Last not but least is Sindi Vana, the only female member of the band. She oversees the music, ensures the band is on time for its gigs, and fulfills the role of manager as well.
According to Sicelo, they started out with just a computer, some recording software, a R20 dynamic microphone, a piece of wire and a pair of pantyhose (which they used to make their own popfilter) – and their recording booth was a cupboard.
When asked what they’re all about, Sicelo said, “We’re a growing record company for passionate musicians. We share music. We take kids off the streets, and let them spend time with us in the studio. We record music, do voice-overs and produce beats.”
He describes the environment in the studio at the house in Westergloor as a therapy session, saying, “I’ve seen people heal through our music, feeling reborn, alive again and at home. We grow each other. It’s a family.”
Sicelo shared his personal story about the important role music has played in his life with the Herald. He said, “I didn’t choose music, music chose me. I was a bad kid, I didn’t listen until I let music into my life. Since then, my life has changed in a positive way. I’ve lost friends for the good but gained friends for the better.”
The group’s goal is to reach heights that don’t exist yet. They want to build a legacy, not just for themselves but for the people – people who want to be reborn but haven’t found themselves. They believe music is the key to bigger, better things.
Klassiq Phlow Entertainment is currently working on a double disc, but some of their work is available to the public via digital media on various platforms, such as SoundCloud.
“We haven’t won any awards yet, but we have scored friendship and people’s hearts.”
