Residents’ life at dumpsite: God their only way out

Minister: This is not a place to live.

No food, no water, appalling living conditions and very little hope.

In the day, flies and sometimes pigs, surround their homes, while at night, they live in total darkness. This is what life is like for residents at the Randfontein dumping site. It is said that an estimated 300 people, including children, live there.

But on Friday, 10 June, El-Shaddai Ministries shed some light in their lives by treating them to a proper meal – something they only get twice a week according to Mpho Mathibe, a minister from El-Shaddai.

Mfondu Nonyukela, another minister from El-Shaddai told the Herald that they have been supporting the residents for the past two months. He says they cook for them on Wednesdays and Fridays.

We arrive, invite residents to come out of their homes, and start praying for the sick, for jobs, their situation and those who want to be born again,” Nonyukela said.

He explains further, “As a group we read from the Rhapsody, which is available in Sotho, Zulu and English, and share the Word from the Bible.”

Asked about the residents’ living conditions Nonyukela said, “We are concerned. They have no water, no electricity, no shelter, no schools.”

Mathibe added, “This is not a place to live. We want to change their lives and get them out, but we have to change their minds first, through the Word of God.”

On a positive note – Mathibe said the government is preparing a place for them.
