Future of Afrikaans schools to be debated

What do you think of the court ruling and the 'proposed plan to change offensive school names and names which glorify Apartheid icons'?

I recently read an official statement from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), in which they state that the future of Afrikaans schools will be debated on 2 June.

The statement reads as follows:

‘In light of the recent Constitutional Court ruling and the proposed plan to change offensive school names and names which glorify Apartheid icons, a perception has been created that the department is unfairly targeting Afrikaans schools.

‘Therefore a debate between Gauteng Education MEC, Mr Panyaza Lesufi and Afriforum’s Mr Kallie Kriel will thrash out the significance of the above.’

What do you, the reading public, think of the court ruling and the ‘proposed plan to change offensive school names and names which glorify Apartheid icons’?

Is Afrikaans being attacked more than 20 years after South Africa was declared a ‘democracy’?

A follow-up article on the outcome of the debate between Lesufi and Kriel will be published soon.
