Sweet-toothed thieves nabbed

Police: If you are found guilty of shoplifting, you will be sentenced and have a criminal record.

Three men, one of them a 56-year-old, have been arrested and will soon appear in court facing serious shoplifting charges.

According to Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu, Westonaria Police spokesperson, the men were arrested over a period of three days for shoplifting after they each stole items from a shop in the area.

Police said the first suspect, aged 56, stole two packs of Stimorol and one pack of Orbit chewing-gum to the value of R61. The second suspect, aged 38, stole two rolls of extra strong musk sweets to the value of R6,58 and the third suspect stole an 80g chocolate bar to the value of R10,90.

Security officers spotted the suspects in the act of stealing and concealing the items with the intention of evading payment. They then apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the police.

Shoplifting or stealing is a crime and punishable by law,” said Ndlovu.

He added, “The community is warned to refrain from committing this crime as they will be arrested and prosecuted in a court of law. It does not matter how little value the stolen item has. If you are found guilty of shoplifting, you will be sentenced and have a criminal record.

“Be warned that businesses have installed CCTV cameras that are monitoring criminal activities.”
