VIDEO: 12 per cent increase and 13th cheque or else …

Staff vow to continue their protest action until their demands are met.

Captain Liquor staff demanding a wage increase burnt tyres in protest against management in Aureus.

The strike started on Monday, 16 May, and the staff have vowed to continue their protest action until their demands are met. They threaten to get more supporters to make sure their concerns are heard.

One of the staff members, Tiisetso Mahase, said they want a 12 per cent wage increase as well as a 13th cheque.

“Some of us are working for R17 an hour right now. That’s not enough to feed our families,” Mahase said.

Another employee, Jerry Sithole, said the strike action has been coming for years.

“We’ve wanted to take action but couldn’t after losing our case at the CCMA,” Sithole explained.

Sithole said they are also unhappy about the major liquor distributor allegedly employing contractors from outside Randfontein.

“People from Randfontein should benefit before anyone else,” he said.

Sithole said their union’s shop steward was negotiating with Captain Liquor management to resolve the issue.
