Big names on the golf course for charity

The Herald also discovers Mpho Nawa was quite the sportsman back in the day.

Some big names in the West Rand recently took to the golf course all in the name of charity.

What is known as the Inaugural Mayoral Charity Golf Day was held at the Randfontein Golf Club last Friday.

Mpho Nawa, the West Rand District Mayor, who is serving out his last few months in office spoke to the Herald about his upbringing in Randfontein and how – before he took up the task of mayor – he used to be quite the sportsman.

At the tee off while waiting for the golfers ahead of him to finish their turn on the first hole, Nawa encountered an old school friend, Raymond Moeng, who happens to freelance at the Herald. Present at the event and playing on Nawa’s team was him and Raymond’s former agriculture teacher.

Nawa explained that he and Raymond were in school together and used to run marathons together when they were children.

Raymond joked and said, “You would never believe how much trouble this guy [Nawa] got into in school.” Nawa also explained he was a boxer in his day and that people should not be fooled by his paunch. He used to be a provincial boxer.

“I was one of the first provincial boxers in the area at the time,” he said.

These days Nawa doesn’t dabble as much in sport as he used to but he said he teaches his son all he learned when he was a child. While reminiscing with Raymond, Nawa also remembered the bad times which were also exciting times politically, the riots and war zones in townships at the time.

It was bad back in my day, we wrote matric and were surrounded by police but that’s just how it was.”

The pair also spoke about how in those days infrastructure was not as luxurious for them.

“Do you remember when we came from school and we had to do everything? We went running then when we came home we had to make fire because there was no electricity,” Raymond laughed.

Nawa who is regarded highly as mayor hasn’t forgotten his roots and still stays a true Randfonteiner and a West Rander.
