Petrol price to increase by 12c

Motorists expected to fork out 12 cents more at the pumps after April's near R1 hike.

Motorists who use both grades of petrol will have to fork out more at the pumps while diesel users will be paying less on Wednesday, 4 May.

The price of 93 and 95 octane petrol will cost motorists 12 cents more at the pumps.

Diesel heads will be paying 1 cent a litre less for 0.05 percent sulphur diesel and 2 cents a litre less for 0.005 percent sulphur diesel. Illuminating paraffin will also be decreasing by 9 cents a litre and liquefied petroleum gas will drop by 5 percent a kilogram.

The increase comes only a month after motorists had to fork out nearly R1 after the general fuel levy increasing on top of a petrol price increase.

The petrol price doesn’t just influence the road trip here and there motorists will not be able to make but it also affects emergency medical services.

Denver Ramnarian, founding member of Quick Response Services (QRS), a local ambulance service, shared how the petrol price unfortunately influences their services.

“We bill medical aids when available but we also cater for people who don’t have medical aid and those who cannot afford the high cost of ambulance services.

We make special arrangements and prices to help them but if fuel prices go up then we need to also increase prices to accommodate that.

“This means the underprivileged will be paying more for a service they already can’t afford and they will be forced to wait for state ambulances which may take longer and put people’s lives at risk,” Ramnarian explained.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) predicts a rise in the petrol price in the short to medium term and a possibility of larger hikes should the Rand come under pressure.
