Death toll in taxi-truck horror crash rises to 15

Mass funeral to be held on Saturday, 7 May.

The death toll from a horror crash between a taxi and truck on the R41 last Friday has risen to 15, Randfontein Police said.

This is two more than the figure of 13 as previously reported.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said one of the survivors was visited in Leratong hospital by Mzi Khumalo (Randfontein Executive Mayor), Mashole Jacob Manamela (Randfontein Police Station Commander) as well as Koketso Calvin Seerane, (Executive Mayor of Mogale City).

On Saturday, David Makhura (Gauteng Premier) also visited the families of the victims in Kagiso.

According to Ernst, there are still three unidentified bodies but families will be visiting the mortuary on Tuesday to identify them.

According to a reliable source, there will be a memorial service held on Wednesday, 4 May at the Swanieville Stadium while a mass funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 7 May at the same venue.

The accident took place at around 11am on Friday, 29 April after the truck – that was travelling in the Westbound direction – and taxi – travelling in an Eastbound direction – collided head-on. It is believed the driver of the taxi allegedly lost control and swerved towards the truck’s direction. After this tragic accident, bodies, covered in silver blankets, were seen strewn on the road.

Ernst confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
