UPDATE taxi-truck horror crash: Eyewitnesses speak

Police: A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Randfontein Police confirmed that 13 people were killed when a taxi and truck collided head-on on the R41 (Randfontein Road) at around 11am on Friday.

“12 people died from the taxi and one died from the truck – the driver,” Ernst said.

She said that more men were found dead than women but sexes will later be tallied up and added the truck was travelling in the Westbound direction and the taxi in an Eastbound direction

Benny Mohlabeng, regional commander of West Rand Emergency Services added that four people sustained critical injuries.

“Three patients were taken to Leratong Hospital and one was taken to Lenmed Hospital.”

He further explained a resuscitation was performed on one of the 13 people but unfortunately, the patient succumbed to their injuries. ER24, Quick Response Services, Netcare 911 and provincial medical services all were on the scene. Cars lined the road in all their numbers.

When the Herald got onto the scene, bodies were seen strewn across the R41 covered with silver blankets. Hendrik Austin, an eyewitness who was travelling to Randfontein not far behind the truck said he saw the truck swerve off into the direction of the taxi before the collision.

Ernst, however, said witnesses told police the taxi lost control and swerved off into the direction of the truck.
