SOTA 2016: R’fontein’s new name revealed

From electrical infrastructure to waste management projects.

The Randfontein Executive Mayor held the annual State of the Town Address (SOTA) and gave officials and residents the details of what has passed and what is to come.

The address took place last Friday at the Mohlakeng Ramosa Hall. The address would make for Khumalo’s last in his political term.

The first topic Khumalo delved into was electricity infrastructure in town. He stated that pillar boxes and mini substation doors were installed during the 2015 to 2016 financial year.

Previously approved projects are still under construction which includes upgrading of overhead networks in Wheatlands, demand side management technology programs at the purification works and the construction of a new 132 000/ 11 000 Volt substation point in Mohlakeng.

High mast lights have yet to be installed at Oasis Manor and in Aureus and redundant MV cables in Hectorton and the Randfontein Civic Centre need to be replaced.

It has been estimated to cost R40 million in the 2016 to 2017 financial year to address the electricity backlog in town.

R150 million is then estimated to eradicate water and sanitation backlogs at the municipality.

The pressing issue of roads was raised and Khumalo stated that 14 roads have been rehabilitated and constructed in the 2014 to 2016 financial years.

Additionally, storm-water drains were installed in 15 roads in town. Khumalo highlighted that even in the roads department there are backlogs and it would cost a whopping R500 million over the next five years to address.

The muncipality’s solid waste management section received R7 million to establish the Mohlakeng Buy Back Facility which means more jobs, more recycling and less litter.

The mayor’s speech focused a lot on the backlogs the municipality experiences and going forward the goal is to eradicate said backlogs hopefully in the next five years.

Lastly, Khumalo announced that the merging of Randfontein and Westonaria will come into effect after 3 August, 2016 and will be called the Rand West City Local Municipality.
