Judo champ on our doorstep

Over 50 medals and only one of them bronze.

A young Judo champion is right on our doorstep, knocking his competition down one at a time.

Faghan Roberts from Toekomsrus is a 16-year-old brown belt (Junior Sensei) at the Golden School club.

He has been doing Judo for seven years and has raked in medal after medal. His collection hangs on his wall. He has collected over 50 medals over the years and said he has even given some away.

Faghan got into Judo in 2009 when his mother suggested he do a sport.

She asked me if I wanted to do karate or some kind of fighting sport and I told her if she can find me a sport like that which I’d like, I’d do it,” he said.

Shortly after that, he joined a Judo club and has been winning all the way. Of all his medals, he has only gotten a bronze once, the rest has been gold and silver. The young Judo prodigy is looking towards getting his black belt next year.

He is currently a grade 11 pupil at Randfontein High School (RHS) and when he leaves school, he plans on doing Judo but as a hobby – his plan for the future is studying information technology (IT) and opening his own business.

He clearly has the smarts to reach this goal as last year he went to Germany to compete and had to come back to school during the holidays to write his final grade 10 exam and passed even though he had to be on top of his game in Judo.

Faghan’s family are currently looking for a company to sponsor him for when he goes on tournaments outside Gauteng and South Africa as in the past the scramble for finances nearly lost him opportunities to compete outside the border.

If any companies are interested in Faghan representing their brand, they can contact Lucille Roberts on 072 768 8268.
