Mayor addresses district for the last time

All you need to know about the town and the rest of the West Rand.

“I will not ever turn my back on the people of the West Rand,” said Mpho Nawa, West Rand District Executive Mayor during his last State of the District Address in Krugersdorp recently.

Not only did Nawa discuss what he has done in his five years of service but he explained that his purpose as mayor was to eradicate poverty, inequality and joblessness.

This being his mandate, Nawa explained that 161 000 jobs have been created since he began his term (2011 to 2016) through various programmes across the district. With regards to development planning, 9 000 homes were constructed and over 1 000 street lights were installed.

In addition, a 4km walking lane also has been constructed between Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus as well as a cycling lane linking Mohlakeng to Ranfontein CBD.

In terms of service delivery, the West Rand District’s War Room, various areas have been identified as needing government intervention such as Bekkersdal and Brandvlei.

On the agricultural front, Agriparks have also been established including one in Bekkersdal which has 20 tunnels, a packhouse and an administrative block have already been completed. Brandvlei’s Agripark has yet to be constructed but Nawa assured construction will commence soon.

With regarding to safety, Nawa said the West Rand’s fire stations are not optimal but two more fire trucks have been commissioned as a result as well. A new response station has been opened in the district. Ten more fire trucks worth R39 million are in the process of being obtained.

In addition, CCTV cameras have been installed in Randfontein and Westonaria CBDs.
