77 percent of SA registered to vote

Residents still have until the elections to register.

The last voter registration weekend saw political parties side by side, getting residents to register and update their details.

On Saturday, 9 April, the ANC, DA and EFF were all seen outside the IEC voting station in West Porges, assisting people with registrations and updating of details.

The three parties were meters from each other and worked respectively towards the same goal. Residents stopped on the side of the road to quickly check their details and some drove past and gave a hoot and a shout for their political parties.

According to the IEC, 1 384 254 new voters were added to the voters roll which bumps the number of voters up to 26 296 601 voters which is 77 percent of the eligible voting population.

80 percent of first-time voters were recorded to be under the age of 30. 52,54 percent are women and 47.46 percent are men.

Previous voters received an SMS that the IEC did not have an address for them, should these voters not have gotten a chance to visit their voting stations over the registration weekends, their details can still be updated.

Local IEC offices will still be open during office hours until the municipal elections where voters can update their details and register.

The official date of the municipal elections is expected to be announced sometime in May.
