Young artist has high hopes

Artist: I see a future for myself in art and I see myself as the future of art.

Bulelani Mtshabe, Westonaria artist, is stroke by stroke painting his way to being among the greatest artists.

Bulelani says he has been painting for the past eight years but he has been sketching and doing portraits for the past 16 years.

I have always had the urge to paint and draw for as long as I can remember,” he said.

His earliest encounter with art was a simple one, he said he went to a library as a child and saw a painting on the wall and from that moment on he decided to become a painter.

Like so many others, Bulelani is a self-taught artist. In the art world, Bulelani is referred to as an outsider artist which is a loose term coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972.

“I did get a couple of pointers with regards to painting from an established artist by the name of Dott Stallberg,” Bulelani explained.

He draws inspiration from the world around him and paints subjects across the spectrum; from landscapes to the occasional still life, subsequently his favourite artist is South African-born Louis Trichardt.

“It’s not long now before people talk about the top 10 greatest artists of all time, they will mention my name first. I see a future for myself in art and I see myself as the future of art,” he said.
