UPDATE: Firearm license renewal myths busted

What you need to know if you plan on owning a gun.

Randfontein Police have issued a statement about gun license renewals and they have now spoken out about first time licenses.

In an article published in the 1 April edition of the Herald, police gave residents the do’s and don’ts of how to renew a gun licence.

A few residents contacted the Herald misunderstanding that the statement was specifically for gun license renewals. The police have since shed light on how to do a first time application of a competency certificate and gun license.

Competency certificate:
• R70 in cash
• Two colour ID photos (of a good quality)
• Three reference letters (from friends, family and neighbours)

After a resident has obtained a competency certificate, they can apply for a license to own a firearm.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, a competency is only applied for once but a gun license needs to be renewed every five years.

The Randfontein Police station’s firearm office is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 2pm except on public holidays.

For first time applications or gun license renewals in Westonaria, the Westonaria Police station’s firearm office is open from Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 3.45pm.
