Help! I have a sewage pool in my backyard

There are two other families living here, right next to this sewage water. - Bruce Pillay

Bruce and his wife Amanda Pillay from Toekomsrus has been living with a big pool of sewage in their backyard in Ruby Street for almost two years.

The Pillay’s, who has been living on the premises for more than 20 years, say they have complained to the Toekomsrus Municipality several times.

On one occasion they were told that this was not a municipality problem and that they should get their own plumbers. Bruce went as far as getting his son to help him to inspect the pipes. After this, he discovered that it was indeed a sewerage pipe that burst.

The last time they got an employee from the municipality to assess the problem, the Pillay’s were told that he will fix the problem if they pay him an amount of R1 700.

Bruce, who is unemployed, says, “Why should I pay him if this is his work?”

While Bruce showed the Herald the gumboots he and his son used to go into the sewage water, he said, “There are two other families living here, right next to this sewage water. Both have babies.

This is a big health hazard. It is extremely unhygienic.

“The smell is unbearable, especially when the sun shines on it during the day.”
