Firearm license renewal myths busted

Don't get caught out by hoaxes around firearm renewals.

Hoaxes have been doing the rounds regarding renewals of firearm licenses and the Randfonein Police want to set the record straight.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson,

The Randfontein firearm office is concerned about the hoaxes that scare applicants who are now required to make applications for renewals.

“No training is required and no other fees than indicated by the police officer is payable.”

Ernst explained further that it was brought to the attention of the police that an institution requires fees up to the amount of R 1000 for documentation that is not necessary during the renewal process.

Subsequently, she shared what is required by the police to renew a firearm license.

Documentation needed:
• R140 in cash
• Four colour ID photos
• Previous license card(s)
• Identity document (ID)
• Proof of residence
• Two testimonials from a spouse, friend, and/ or a work colleague.

With regards to colour ID photos, Ernst said the photos have to be of a good quality.

She added photos taken at Photo First for example are of a good quality that scans well and if the applicant wears glasses, they are to remove them for the purpose of the photo.

Testimonial format:
• I know the applicant very well as he/she is my
• I have known him or her for x amount of years or months
• He or she is mentally stable and not inclined to act violently
• He or she is not dependent on any substance with an intoxicating or narcotic effect
• He or she is a person of good character
• He or she is not a person with temperamental or emotional outbursts
• He or she is a person with stable emotional behavior
• There are no negative aspects about the applicant
• The applicant has no criminal history
• I have no objections about the applicant possessing a firearm
• A witness must also sign the testimonial

The testimonial can be typed or handwritten.

Gun owners can get their applications at the Randfontein police station from Monday to Friday from 8am to 2pm except on public holidays. The Randfontein Police accept only applications of people residing or working in Randfontein. In the case of the latter, proof of work address must be provided.

The Randfontein police station currently has 160 license cards which have yet to be collected by applicants.

If you applied, please enquire if the card(s) are ready for collection,” Ernst said.
