Torn and tattered SA flag spotted at court

'What kind of impression does this leave on people visiting the town?'

Dirk van der Westhuizen, 53, could not believe his own eyes when he saw the South African flag, flapping torn and tattered above the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.

Working in Waterpan, he travels to Westonaria frequently to buy stock. Van der Westhuizen decided to keep a close eye on the situation, thinking the personnel at court are fully aware of the situation and that they are in the process of fixing or replacing the flag.

But on Monday last week nothing has changed and the flag still was in the same condition.

It’s a disgrace. Is this the type of respect we have for our country?

“What kind of impression does this leave on people visiting the town?” van der Westhuizen said.

Unhappy about the situation, van der Westhuizen decided to take matters into his own hands and personally visited the court. There he showed one of the supervisors the state that the flag was in where she allegedly replied, “This is unacceptable.”

After they went back inside, another woman allegedly told him that if he wanted the flag in a perfect condition, he should give them the money and they would then fix it.

The Herald spoke to the supervisor on 18 March where she replied she could not speak to the media. The Herald then was referred to their regional office but no contact could be be made with them.
