Fake R100 note leads to robbery

Police executed two arrests days after the incident took place.

Two suspects were arrested days after they ransacked and robbed a supermarket in Middelvlei.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randontein police, “It was alleged that the 22-year-old shopkeeper was approached by five men who bought some goods at his store. The men then presented a fake R100 note and the shopkeeper refused to accept it.”

Thereafter, one suspect allegedly grabbed the victim and strangled him while the other suspects ransacked the shop. They took merchandise and the victim’s cellphone before fleeing the scene in a blue Datsun.

“On Saturday, 21 February, the vehicle was spotted by the victim and other residents in the vicinity,” Ernst said.

The Randfontein police were immediatly informed and two of the five suspects aged 24 and 31 were arrested and detained. “The suspects were charged and their first appearance at the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court was on 29 February. The case was remanded until 8 March for a bail application,”

“The Randfontein station commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela congratulated the persons who reacted swiftly to assist the victim and executed the arrest of the suspects,” Ernst said.
