Bike stolen despite R17 000 security upgrade

'I thought we were safe and our belongings too.'

On Tuesday morning, 23 February, Franco van Deventer, 39, had a rude awakening when he discovered his treasured 1200 CC GS BMW motorbike had been stolen from his place of residence in Lourie Street, Greenhills despite a R17 000 security upgrade.

Even more shocking was the fact that the suspects stole the bike while moving around in an area where two beams, situated approximately 12 meters away from each other was supposed to detect any movement.

But between 2am and 3am that day, no alarm sirens went off and the suspects easily got away with van Deventer’s motorbike. Van Deventer said his wife switched on the alarm just before 11pm, and he deactivated it at 3.30am.

Van Deventer said the suspects entered by derailing the electric gate. He is furious at the well-known security company who sold him the beams in 2013 for about R17 000.

I thought we were safe and our belongings too,” he said.

When he spoke to one of the employees of the security company, the answer allegedly was that criminals know how to override the systems.

The specific beams van Deventer had installed is called the Paradox and he warns the community to be very careful of purchasing these beams, thinking it creates security and safety.

Van Deventer has opened a case at the Randfontein Police. The motorbike is a 2009 model, red, 1200 CC GS BMW adventurer with number plate BB072KGP.
