Baby-abuse allegations surface

Police: A case of child abuse is being investigated.

A recent post on Facebook accusing a three-week-old baby’s young father of assaulting his baby has had the Herald‘s office phones ringing off the hook with enquiries.

Responding to the allegations, Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said, “This office can confirm a case of child abuse is being investigated. Police are concerned about the witch hunt currently on social media, since these allegations are inaccurate and some of the information is grossly exaggerated and borders on slander.

It needs to be mentioned that stories of this nature are viewed as serious and the distribution of false or inaccurate information may lead to criminal and/ or civil prosecution.

“It is advised that the circulation of this post is stopped with immediate effect and that in future the Randfontein community refrain from partaking in a witch hunt of this nature.”

Any person who has information regarding this case is requested to come forward and report it to the Krugersdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) on 011 951 1111.
