Second cyclist killed in less than a week

Police: He was involved in an accident with a passing truck.

A 57-year-old man died in a road traffic accident on the N14/ Magaliesburg Road while taking part in a cycle race recently.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed the incident took place at around 8.30am on Saturday, 6 February.

This is the second fatal cyclist accident in a week, since a teenager got killed on 9 February on the Blybank Road, near the R559 just outside Carletonville. The teenager was knocked over by a bakkie.

“It is alleged that the 57 year old cyclist was participating in a cycle race that was conducted in the area. The race was allegedly started at Cradlestone Mall, then ran through most of the Krugersdorp Cluster area, namely Krugersdorp, Hekpoort, Magaliesburg, Randfontein, Muldersdrift and Tarlton policing precincts until it ended back at Cradlestone Mall.

It is alleged that the victim was cycling towards Magaliesburg when he was involved in an accident with a passing truck. The cyclist and the truck was travelling in the same direction and it is alleged that the truck did not run over the cyclist but one of the wheels allegedly clipped him and he fell. The cyclist passed away on the scene,” said Ernst.

The cause of death will be determined during a post mortem. The Randfontein Police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
