Good and bad news for motorists

Department of Energy: Weakening of the Rand against the US dollar significantly contributed to this fuel price adjustment.

There is some good and some bad news for motorists at the pumps after January’s financial slump.

The Department of Energy announced last Friday that all grades of petrol will increase by 6 cents per litre as from Wednesday, 3 February. Diesel and paraffin will, however, be decreasing by up to 79 cents per litre.

The explanation given for the increase was went in the direction of the tightness in the market as a result of major refineries in the United States (US) planning on shutting down.

The department added the weakening of the Rand against the US dollar significantly contributed to this fuel price adjustment.

Adjusted prices:

• Petrol (93 and 95 octane) will increase by 6c a litre.
• Diesel (0.05 percent sulphur) will decrease by 62c a litre.
• Diesel (0.005 percent sulphur) will decrease by 63c a litre.
• Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will decrease by 79c a litre.
• Illuminating paraffin (wholesale) will decrease by 59c a litre.
• Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by 1c a kilogram.
