Police: 17 of these arrests were made for being in possession of or dealing in drugs.

Randfontein Police made 79 arrests in less than a week from the period Friday 15 January to Wednesday 20 January.

“The suspects were arrested for numerous offences, ranging from serious crimes such as armed robbery to less serious offences such as being drunk in public and crossing of a railway line. 17 of these arrests were made for being in possession of or dealing in drugs.

“The Randfontein Community played a vital part in some of the arrests and police management expressed their appreciation towards the communities who are taking back their streets.” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

In one instance in Toekomsrus, the community and CPF assisted in the arrest of suspects who were in possession of stolen property and drugs.

In another incident in Botha Plots, the community assisted the police in apprehending a suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Housebreaking suspects were arrested in Mohlakeng with the assistance of the patrollers. Stolen property also was found with the help of the patrollers.

The communities are commended for taking control in their area and for acting with the necessary responsibility in tracing and apprehending suspects. The police also wishes to appreciate the communities for the way in which they handle these arrests since they refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

Residents must please remember that if you break the law, you are also deemed a criminal and will have to face the consequences of your action.
