Woman robbed at gunpoint during morning stroll

Police: He pointed at her with the firearm and demanded cash.

A 30-year-old woman recently was robbed at gunpoint while walking in Salie Street in Homelake.

“It is alleged by the victim she was taking a walk in the area at about 10.20am last Monday when she was confronted by an unknown man who was armed.

He pointed at her with the firearm and demanded cash. She was only in possession of her cellphone which the man took. He then fled on foot,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

The victim was able to flag down a passing security officer from Mapogo Security who immediately gave chase. The suspect went into hiding but with determination, the security officer was able to track him down in a yard in Salie Street where he was hiding. The suspect was handed over to police who responded to the complaint.

The 23-year-old suspect was detained at Randfontein Police Station and appeared in court on Thursday.

The investigating officer is warrant officer, Karen Nel. Acting station commander, Colonel Tshidi Filita expressed her satisfaction at the quick reaction and ultimate arrest made by the member of the security company.

We believe this action was a true reflection of partnership between police and the community. We appreciate any efforts that can assist us in bringing criminals to justice,” Filita said.
