Major roadblock on R28 brings awareness

Traffic Police Chief: Our aim is to make motorists aware that there will be zero tolerance on the roads this festive season.

The Randfontein Traffic Police alongside other departments launched their Arrive Alive campaign by starting it off with a major roadblock North and Southbound on Friday, 4 December.

The Randfontein Traffic Department, Gauteng Traffic Department, the Randfontein Police, the Flying Squad and the Immigration Department all joined in this operation.

Our aim is to make motorists aware there will be zero tolerance on the roads this festive season but also to educate them with pamphlets that we are handing out on safety and driving tips and hazards,” said Randfontein Traffic Police Chief, Kenny Mampondo.

Randfontein MMC of Public Safety, Lazarus Matshuisa and member of the Public Safety Portfolio committee, Josef Mbangeni also attended and were very active in handing out pamphlets to all the passing motorists.

At their parade briefing, these various departments were told to work hand-in-hand and look out for each other’s safety. Before the roadblock started, Mampondo said, “The Randfontein Traffic Police officers will, as the festive season start, be deployed from the satellite caravan that will be stationed next to Uncle Harry’s Roadhouse next to the R28.”

The major roadblock then took off where random cars were carefully inspected by Traffic Police and searched by the police.

The roadblock started at 3.30pm and lasted up to 6.45pm. The Herald had the chance to observe the roadblock and found that the officers from all the departments were in good spirits, treating motorists with respect and courtesy.

Motorists also gave their full cooperation and the roadblock surely made motorists aware of the fact that these departments will be clamping down on all illegal activities and irresponsible driving behaviour this festive season.
