There are two types of Christmas people.

This article is for the latter kind.

For the latter, Christmas movies have become a cliché. They all have the same story line. It can either go one of two ways; the boy-meets-girl-boy-gets-girl-for-Christmas chauvinistic type or the Home-Alone-family-film type.

After years and years of these two themes being over-represented Tim Burton came along with Helena Boham Carter and Johnny Depp and gifted us timeless Christmas classics.

Where would those who cringe at the sight of mistletoe and wreaths be without the Nightmare Before Christmas, The Grinch, Edward Scissor Hands and Batman Returns?

For fans of alternative Christmas movies here is a list of the top 10 alternative Christmas movies:

• 10: Iron Man 3. Basically Tony Stark fighting crime and his own demons and it happens to be Christmas. Who would not love comic book heroes over the Christmas period?

• 9: Gremlins. Remember Gremlins? Director Joe Danté brought us this monstrosity of a movie and we loved it. Parents today still take tips from this film as a guide what not to buy your child.

• 8: The Nightmare Before Christmas. The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king. Skellington discovers Christmastown and bam! Box office hit. A Tim Burton classic.

• 7: The Grinch. Jim Carry played our favourite Christmas-ruiner who discovered the meaning of Christmas. Thank you for this film, Ron Howard.

• 6: Edward Scissor Hands. Tim Burton teamed up with Johnny Depp and made the weirdest and sweetest Christmas movie ever made. This is also a wonderful opportunity to see Depp in leather.

• 5: Rocky IV. Balboa goes against Drago and flies to Russia to train for a Christmas Day fight. Boxing a day before boxing day? I think yes.

• 4: Catch Me if you Can. Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) runs away from home, cons is way into various top careers, robs a few banks all while FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) is hot on his tail. This all happens before Abagnale’s 18th birthday.

• 3: The entire Harry Potter series. It’s Christmas in every Harry Potter movie. This is the perfect thing to watch back to back to avoid annoying family members.

• 2: Batman Returns. Yet another one of Tim Burton’s classics. The Penguin is in it, Catwoman is in it. It’s like watching a comic book for Christmas.

• 1: Die Hard. Bruce Willis plays Johan McClane and is visiting his estranged wife Bonnie Bedelia and two daughters on Christmas Eve. They go to her work Christmas party when the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists. Naturally McClane takes it upon himself to free the hostages, fight the baddies, fire a few guns, make a few traps. Die Hard is the ultimate action-filled Christmas movie anyone could ask for.
