What is the use of voting for the DA?

'The past eight years our neighbourhood has deteriorated at an alarming pace.'

Ward 3 Sector 6 (Zone 2) had a DA representative on the Randfontein Municipal Council since 1994.

The first two communicated with voters on a regular basis, but the last eight years we have a phantom representing us.

I have seen him twice; once on a voting day when I went to vote, and once per chance at the old Wheatlands boxing hall. He, however, claims that everybody in his constituency knows him. Enquiring in the neighbourhood, I found most of the people do not even recognise his name.

You can try to phone him, and if you are lucky, he will answer. In a most high-handed manner he will tell you he cannot do anything about your complaint as he has no authority in the council.

So, what is the use of voting for the DA?

The past eight years our neighbourhood has deteriorated at an alarming pace. On a daily basis we are confronted with new squatter camps, with all the filth and lawlessness accompanying it. No complaints can rid us of the illegal chicken slaughterhouse in Lang Avenue, causing an infestation of rats as big as cats. No potholes in our area are fixed, so that in certain places we have to drive on the sidewalk.

Illegal use of the plots for truck depots is rife, and the filth and dumping between Johnnie’s cafe and the first stop street in Randgate according to the DA are “a few papers blown around by the wind”. God forbid the raw sewage dumped openly by the residents of these squatter camps doesn’t get blown around by the wind as well.

Again I have to ask, what is the point in having a DA councillor without authority or persuasion tactics? If you cannot see to the basic services of the people who voted for you, you don’t belong in politics. Politicians should be dignified authoritative people who can recognise filth and the danger that illness could be caused by it, and who can negotiate a solution to a problem.

Me vote for the DA again and have a phantom representing me?

Come again.
