Woman robbed, kidnapped, gang raped and beaten gets justice

A 25-year-old man was brought to book and will serve life in prison.

A 25-year-old man who participated in a gang rape of a 23-year-old woman after breaking into her home and stealing various items has been sentenced to life in prison.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, The incident occurred on 12 April 2014 at midnight. Suspects broke into the victim’s home while she was sleeping. They proceeded to assault the victim and took items from her home such as a TV set, clothing and money.

The suspects then forced the victim out of her home at gunpoint before dragging her to the Mohlakeng Hostel. At the hostel the victim was repeatedly gang raped by the suspects and was severely beaten.

Ernst explained that the woman managed to escape at daybreak and immediately reported the incident at the Mohlakeng Police Station.

Shortly after at approximately 9am on the same day one of the suspects was apprehended.

Sibiya Noxsmana Nhlanhla, the accused was found guilty on six counts; housebreaking, armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, kidnapping, rape, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was sentenced to five years for housebreaking and kidnapping. He also received a sentence of 15 years for armed robbery and possession of an unlicenced firearm. For the charge of rape he received life imprisonment.

The presiding judge, Judge Nemavhidi determined that all sentences will run concurrently and the suspect will therefore effectively serve a life sentence. Advocate Singh was prosecuting on behalf of the state.

“The Randfontein Police management applauded Warrant officer Bongani Mpete with the thorough investigation into the matter. The presentation in court and the ultimate outcome of the case is proof of the professionalism during the investigation,” Ernst concluded.
