Steve, Karlien blow R’fontein away

Hardy R'fonteiners braced the cold to see the biggest music performance next to the Randfontein Show.

Steve Hofmeyr and Karlien van Jaarsveld blew Randfonteiners away when they visited the town during the Wilde Opskop in die Weste (WOW) show at the Greenhills Stadium on Saturday.

The event was hosted and organised by the Randfontein Rugby Club and scores of Randfonteiners flocked to the stadium to have a listen to two of South Africa’s biggests names in music.

The doors opened at 10am and before the show parents and children had a chance to enjoy a few hours of mini and senior rugby. Stalls lined the field with every food under the sun.

On the far corner of the field was the VIP section that had the likes of Mapogo Security and the Ben Morganrood Group.

It wasn’t long before the music acts began. Tents and camping chairs were put up by fans to enjoy the show as best they could.

The weather played up the morning of the event but nothing could stop the show from going on. There was just a slight drizzle for a short period of time but the skies cleared in preparation for the music lineup.

Fans sat under their tents in full winter-wear – not even the cold weather could keep Randfontein away.

First up on the lineup of singers was Tanya V followed by Heuning and then Willem Botha. These three established singers opened up the stage for veteran entertainers Karlien van Jaarsveld and Steve Hofmeyr.

Karlien was accompanied by two of her band mates and had the crowed eating out of the palm of her hand. Young couples were in passionate embraces dancing to her music as well as singing along.

Steve was the headline act for the day and came out in true Steve fashion. On the stage, he is a personality not to be reckoned with. He jumped straight into the music to get the crowed warmed up.

His fans sang with him in unison. After a few Steve classics, he picked up his guitar and entertained the crowed with childhood memories of music and his father.

He said back in those times there were no i-Tunes, i-Pods or earphones. In those days he had to listen to whatever music his father played. He joked and said the only DJ in his youth was DJ-dad.

He proceeded to play on his guitar all the songs he heard back then and depending on the song, he knew what he could and couldn’t ask his father because the music was a tell-tale sign of his mood.

Steve concluded with a few golden oldies and bid Randfontein a good evening.
