Have your cake – and eat it!

Slapstick movie scenes in store when customer throws back cake in bakery's face.

There was drama at a local Spar recently with scenes straight from a slapstick movie – however without the comic element.

Fiefie Mosweu, a loyal customer of the store, ordered a cake for her daughter’s birthday party two weeks before the event, discussed the colours and design she wanted and paid R410. She fetched it on Saturday 29 August at 1pm. At home, she noted the colour and design were not what she asked for. She said she could not return it immediately, because the party already had started

When I cut the cake, I tasted it and found to my dismay it tasted funny. After my sister had tasted it she agreed.”

Fiefie returned to the store that evening and complained to a staff member.

She allegedly asked him, a security guard and random customer to taste it, and they agreed it did not taste good. She then allegedly was offered two normal cakes, priced at R50 each to make up for the inconvenience.

Another staff member then rudely approached me and said: ‘Who do you think must pay for these cakes?’,” she said.

Fiefie claimed the same staff member then took her to his office where he explained he was unable to give her a proper birthday cake as the bakery had closed hours before. She demanded to see the manager and allegedly was told he was the manager. The argument then became heated and the manager allegedly told her to take the cake and that he did not care. He also allegedly said he would call the police.

Both staff members then allegedly said,” Take the cake and go have a good desert.”

At that stage Fiefie was frustrated and angry about the way she allegedly was being treated and realised they were not going to help her. Back home, the guests were still awaiting for their desert – the cake.

She then took the cake and smeared it on their faces. The manager had to call security to close the door behind her.

Another customer allegedly said, “You can not leave this, you have to do something about this.”

Fiefie feels she paid R410 for a cake she did not choose, the cake tasted sour, and she did not get another cake or a refund.

In response to the allegations, Hany Sade, Spar manager confirmed the customer had collected the cake at 1pm that Saturday but “accepted the cake as it was.

We all tasted the cake; there was nothing wrong with its taste.” He also alleged the customer had been drinking and the alcohol taste in one’s mouth could cause something sweet to taste sour.

“Throwing cake in our faces constitutes assault. We actually should open a case against her.”

The Herald is awaiting response from Spar head office.
